Matters of the Heart (Original title: Gray Matters ) is an American comedy film directed by Sue Kramer from 2006 .

action

The New York siblings Gray and Sam share an apartment, are very close and spend a lot of time together. They are often mistaken for lovers. The advertising specialist Gray sets herself the goal of finding a partner for both of them. In a dog park they get to know the zoologist Charlie, who has moved from San Francisco , they meet up and three of them go out in the evening. After the first date, Sam proposes to Charlie. Gray is not at all happy that her brother wants to get married in a rush.

The wedding is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, where Gray and Charlie are also celebrating Charlie's hen party. After drinking way too much, they kiss. Gray is therefore completely upset, also because she realizes that she is in love with her sister-in-law in spé. Charlie, on the other hand, cannot remember the kiss.

Gray then reveals to her therapist that she believes to be a lesbian, which she was never aware of until the kiss. Your therapist thinks this is only a phase and advises her to keep dating men. After a few failed dates, Gray realizes that she can no longer live with a lie. Since she continues to feel drawn to her sister-in-law, she confesses to her brother, who had long suspected that Gray was a lesbian, the kiss with Charlie. Sam reacts positively to her admission, but disapproves of the kiss with Charlie. He then throws her out of the shared apartment and tells her to stay away from him and Charlie.

From now on, Gray concentrates more on her work and the advertising assignment of a new customer. She continues to try to hide her sexual inclination from her colleagues, but when her brother tries to reconcile with her, he involuntarily outs her. Gray is now almost at peace with himself and dares to go to a lesbian bar.

Reviews

Ruthe Stein wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of February 23, 2007 that the film shows characters who are far too naive to exist. The “hustle and bustle” of the characters is said to be so “implausible” that the viewer quickly loses patience and interest.

Desson Thomson wrote in the Washington Post on March 9, 2007 that the film was one of a series of romantic comedies, such as Because I'm a Girl , that featured the homosexual way of life. Matters of the Heart, like many of these films, show the main character's confusion while exploring his or her own sexuality. However, it is difficult for the audience to identify with a character whose relationship with their own brother borders on incest .

Bill Zwecker wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on March 9, 2007 that almost every scene was hypocritical. The audience would not believe that what was happening on the screen could really happen. The actors are “competent” and appear “attractive”. The "beautiful" and "charming" Heather Graham appears as a lesbian "convincing", although a little "forced". Sissy Spacek's talent is "wasted". Zwecker praised the portrayals of Molly Shannon - who had "some of the best lines of dialogue" - and Alan Cumming, who played "charming" and "convincing".

The lexicon of international films judges that the film is a “lively played” “lightweight gender comedy” despite the “rather holey script”.
