Luboš Kubík (born January 20, 1964 in Choceň ) is a former Czech football player and today's coach .
Player career
In his youth, Luboš Kubík played for Spartak Choceň and Spartak Hradec Králové. In the second division season 1981/82 he came to his first appearances in the men's team. At the beginning of 1983, the tall defender was signed by Slavia Prague . In 1988 Slavia made a trip to Germany , during which Kubík and his teammate Ivo Knoflíček decided to flee, which resulted in an automatic ban for 18 months. Both had the prospect of a contract with the English club Derby County .
Kubík and Knoflíček were offered to lift the ban and move abroad on condition of returning to Czechoslovakia . In this delicate situation, Fiorentina reported and offered Slavia 1.3 million DM for Kubík. The Prague Association agreed, but there was an additional problem: Kubík had not yet done his military service. As a student he received the necessary respite from the football association. However, the Defense Minister took a stand and issued a draft notice. Kubík had to flee for the second time.
He stayed in Florence for two years and scored eight goals in 50 games, most of them from free kicks . He then played for FC Metz from 1991 to 1993 , where he scored 13 goals in 70 games. In October 1993 1. FC Nürnberg signed the Czech national player, for whom he scored twice in 40 games. In 1995 the defender returned home, first playing for Atlantic Lázně Bohdaneč in the 3rd division, then for a year for Petra Drnovice . After the successful European Championship in England for the Czech team , Kubík moved to his former club Slavia Prague, but only stayed there for half a year. In the beginning of 1997 he went back to Atlantic Lazně Bohdaneč, which had meanwhile been promoted to the 2nd division and helped the team to march through to the 1st division. On February 26, 1997 he made his last international match, in the 4-1 win against Belarus he came on in the 46th minute for Marek Zúbek .
In the first division season 1997/98 Kubík was only in the first two games on the field. His career seemed over, but Kubík got an offer from the MLS club Chicago Fire . There he was one of the best players in the league, in his first year he was awarded the title "MLS Defender of the Year". In 1999 it belonged to the "MLS Best 11". In 2000 he struggled with injuries and only played 13 games. In early 2001 he was transferred to Dallas Burn , for which he was only able to play eleven games due to injuries.
Coaching career
After the MLS 2001 season, Luboš Kubík ended his career. In 2002 he worked briefly as a manager for SK Hradec Králové . In 2005 he ran for the post of Vice Chairman of the Czech Football Association. In 2005/06 he played in some games for the lower class club Sokol Živanice . In the summer of 2006 he became a coach at the Polish second division club Śląsk Wrocław , from which he resigned in October 2006. At the end of November 2006, he was coach of the English fourth division club Torquay United , which he left in February 2007. In April 2010, Kubík became an assistant coach for the United States national soccer team .
