The Belarusian national soccer team (also Belarusian national soccer team ) is the representation of Belarus in soccer and is organized by the Belarusian soccer association Belaruskaja Federazyja Futbola . She plays her games in the Dinamo stadium in Minsk .

history

The association was founded on December 22nd, 1989, but was only recognized as an independent organization in 1992 and has since taken part in qualifications for world and European championships .

The Belarusian national team first attracted attention when they defeated the Netherlands 1-0 in June 1995 in their first participation in a European Championship qualifying round .

The Belarusian national team has not yet participated in the finals of World or European Championships . The closest Belarusians came to participating in a major tournament during qualifying for the 2002 World Cup . At that time they won four of their five home games, including against the highly rated Norwegians and Poles . On the last day of the match they had it in their own hands to get the relegation. However, the last group game was lost in Wales, so Belarus was only third.

The first game against the German national soccer team took place on May 27, 2008 in Kaiserslautern and ended 2-2 after a 2-0 break.

Thanks to a 1-0 win against the Czech Republic by the U-21 national team at the U-21 European Football Championship in 2011 , Belarus was represented at the 2012 Olympic football tournament for the first time .

Belarus took part in the Baltic Cup twice as a visiting team in 1954 and 1957 .

Football is of little importance in Belarus, the national sport is ice hockey , in which Belarus is much more successful.

Participation in soccer world championships

As part of the USSR and the CIS, Belarus took part in the 1958, 1962, 1966, 1970, 1982, 1986 and 1990 World Championships. However, Belarusian players did not play a significant role in the Soviet national team. After Belarus gained independence, qualifying for the 1998 World Cup was the first attempt to qualify for a World Cup. However, this has not yet been achieved.
