The Tajik national football team ( Tajik : тими миллии Тоҷикистон, Persian : تیم ملی تاجیکستان, Timi Millii Todschikiston) represents the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan in international football. The selection of the Central Asian state has not yet qualified for any World or Asian Cup.
history
The Tajik Football Association was founded in 1936, but did not join FIFA and the Asian Association until 1994. After the fall of the Soviet Union , the first international match took place on June 17, 1992 against Uzbekistan and ended with a 2-2 between the two teams. Mukhsin Mukhamadiyev had scored both goals for Tajikistan and was the first goalscorer in his country's history. According to the FIFA rating, however, the official game was played against Kazakhstan on April 11, 1994 and lost 1-0.
After joining the Asian Football Association, Tajikistan wanted to qualify for the 1996 Asian Cup. Opponents in the qualification were the team of Uzbekistan, which were defeated 4-0 in the first leg in Dushanbe. However, the team lost the second leg in Uzbekistan 5-0 after extra time and was eliminated. In qualifying for the 1998 World Cup, Tajikistan was eliminated just behind China . Also the qualification for the Asian Cup 2000 could not be achieved, as they only finished second behind Iraq in the qualifying group .
Tajikistan achieved its highest victory to date in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, where Guam was defeated 16-0. It was enough to progress after the 2-0 defeat against Iran . In qualifying for the 2004 Asian Cup, the team reached third place with eight points behind Thailand with nine points and was unable to qualify.
In 2006 they won a championship for the first time. In the final of the AFC Challenge Cup , Tajikistan beat Sri Lanka's selection 4-0 and celebrated winning the tournament. The qualification for the 2010 World Cup ended early again against Singapore in the second round. However, the qualification for the 2014 World Cup was successful, the team was eliminated again in the second round against Syria , but as Syria used an unlicensed player in the games, Tajikistan took his place and is now playing in the third main round for the first time in the association's history in a group with North Korea , Japan and Uzbekistan .
The team is in 138th place in the official FIFA world rankings (as of April 6, 2017).
