The Macau National Football Team ( Chinese : 中國 澳門 足球 代表 隊, Portuguese : Seleção Macaense de Futebol ) represents the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China in football. It is subordinate to the national football association Associação de Futebol de Macau (Chinese: 中國 澳門 足球 總會).
history
The team represented Macau at international football events before 1999, when the country was still a Portuguese colony. This was continued after Macau was handed over to the People's Republic of China and converted into a special administrative zone in 1999. Since then, Macau, like Hong Kong , has had its own national team that is independent of the national team of the People's Republic of China , in keeping with the “ one country, two systems ” doctrine.
Macau's first international match took place in 1949 against the South Korean national team . Macau lost the game 5-1. The first victory of a Macau national soccer team dates back to 1975, when they beat Panama 2-1.
Macau is one of the most unsuccessful AFC teams . So far, Macau has not qualified for an Asian soccer championship or a World Cup .
