The Hong Kong national football team ( Chinese  香港 足球 代表 隊 , Pinyin Xiānggǎng Zúqiú Dàibiǎoduì ) represents the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China in football. She reports to the National Football Association Hong Kong Football Association Ltd .

history

The team represented Hong Kong at international football events before 1997, when the country was still a British colony. This continued after Hong Kong was handed over to the People's Republic of China and converted into a Special Administrative Region in 1997. Since then, Hong Kong, like Macau , has had its own national team that is independent of the national team of the People's Republic of China , in keeping with the “ one country, two systems ” doctrine.

The first international matches in Hong Kong took place between 1949 and 1953 against the South Korean national team . Hong Kong lost the first international game in history to South Korea 2: 5 in 1949. The first victory of a Hong Kong national soccer team dates back to 1953, when they could also beat South Korea 4-0.

Hong Kong qualified for three of the first four Asian Championships . In 1956 you could reach third place as a host. In contrast to the Asian Cup, qualifying for the World Cup for Hong Kong was less successful. So far, the national team has not been able to qualify for a World Cup. The most important victory in World Cup qualification was achieved by Hong Kong in qualifying for the 1986 World Cup against the People's Republic of China. China would have been enough to progress through a draw at the end of the first qualifying round, while Hong Kong had to win to advance to the next round. In the end, Hong Kong won 2-1 and entered the knockout round, in which they were ultimately defeated by Japan .
