The Azerbaijani national football team is the selection of the best football players from Azerbaijan .
The team has not yet been able to qualify for a soccer world championship or a soccer championship . Although the country is geographically in Asia , the association is a member of European UEFA , which is why the national team takes part in European competitions.
history
Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union until the end of 1991 , which is why players from the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic could only play in the national soccer team of the USSR .
The Azerbaijani Football Association was founded in 1992 and joined UEFA and FIFA in 1994 . The Azerbaijani national football team played their first competitive games as part of the qualification for the European Championship in 1996 and ended them with one point from 10 games, knocked out in last place. For security reasons, all home games were played in Trabzon , Turkey .
In qualifying for the 1998 World Cup , they managed a surprising 1-0 win against Switzerland , as these were the only points they could get in this group.
They managed another surprise in qualifying for the 2000 European Championship with a 1-1 draw against the later European Championship semi-finalists Portugal . However, Azerbaijan only scored four points in that qualifying round and lost 2-1 to Liechtenstein .
In qualifying for the 2002 World Cup , Azerbaijan achieved only their third competitive win, a 2-0 win against Slovakia . This was followed by a 2-1 win against Serbia-Montenegro in qualifying for the 2004 European Championship .
Nevertheless, Azerbaijan is still one of the football developing countries. The nomination of the Brazilian Carlos Alberto Torres , former world champion from 1970 , as national coach didn't change that. He's already released again. In November 2005, Şahin Diniyev was appointed the new national coach. He presented a three-year plan to build a new team and pushed through the change of jersey colors to blue-red-green (national colors). In qualifying for the European Championship in 2008 they were again bottom of the group, but they managed to beat Finland (1-0). From April 2008 to October 2014 Berti Vogts was the national coach of the Azerbaijani team. With the former German national coach, they finished penultimate in the 2010 World Cup qualifying and left Liechtenstein behind. Against Liechtenstein there was the only victory and a draw. There was a big sensation in the last game. Against the group runners-up, EM semi-finalists and arch-rivals Russia , they scored 1-1 in Baku .
In qualifying for the 2012 European Championship , the team won a 1-0 win against Turkey on October 12, 2010 after beating Germany 1: 6 and Austria 3-0 . The team was also able to surprise with a 1-1 draw against Belgium on September 2, 2011.
In the 2018 World Cup qualification , Azerbaijan also played against Germany. The win against Norway on matchday two and the 0-0 draw against the Czech Republic made the national team 88th in the FIFA world rankings (October 2016 edition), the best place in the country's history.
World Championship participation
- 1930 to 1994 - Did not participate, was part of the USSR national football team .
- 1998 to 2018 - Not qualified
European Championship participation
Azerbaijan took part in the European Championships from 1960 to 1992 as part of the USSR and the CIS . Azerbaijani players did not play a major role in the Soviet national team. Only a few Azerbaijani players came to the European Championship, such as Anatoly Banischewski in 1972 . After the dissolution of the Soviet Union into several independent states, Azerbaijan took part in the qualification for the European Championship in 1996 for the first time, but was never able to qualify and at most it was enough for the penultimate group place.
