The Basque football selection is not recognized by the international football associations UEFA and FIFA .

history

On January 3, 1915, a Basque regional selection wore a game against the selection of Catalonia for the first time. By 1916 there were a total of six repetitions of this game, which was not reissued until 1930 and 1931.

In 1937, the Basque Country regional team went on a trip abroad, initially to France to escape the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War . The team achieved very good results - they won a seven-game Moscow tour against Spartak Moscow and the Moscow city selection six - but mostly against club teams, and in 1938/39 they played in the Mexican capital league ( Liga Amateur del Distrito Federal ), where the Basques finished second behind CF Asturias .

The team that won the Mexican runner-up as CD Euzkadi consisted of the following players: Gregorio Blasco , Isidro Lángara , Ángel Zubieta , José Iraragorri , Emilio Alonso , Leonardo Cilaurren , Serafín Aedo , Kepa Areso, Luis Regueiro , Pedro Regueiro and Chirri II .

The dissolution is closely linked to the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco . After his death and the receipt of the autonomy rights of the Basque Country, the Basque national team was also revived. The first game was won 4-1 against Ireland in 1979 in Bilbao . Games were held irregularly in the following years.

Since 1993 there has always been an international match against “full” members of FIFA towards the end of the calendar year (exception: a match against Tottenham Hotspur ). The venue is usually the home stadium of Athletic Bilbao , San Mamés . Athletic is the only team in the Spanish league that only plays with players of Basque, Basque origin or footballers trained in the Basque Country and therefore considers itself to be the unofficial Basque national team.

On December 29, 2007, during a game against the Catalan football team, several thousand people called for the official recognition of the Basque and Catalan teams during a demonstration in Bilbao.
