José Ángel Iribar Cortajarena (born March 1, 1943 in Zarauz , Gipuzkoa , Spain ) is a former Spanish-Basque football player and coach. As a goalkeeper, Iribar played for CD Baskonia , Athletic Bilbao and the Spanish national football team .
In 1962, Iribar moved to Athletic Bilbao, where he developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the Primera División . He was the Spanish goalkeeper in 1964. With his club he won the Copa del Rey in 1969 and 1973 (then Copa del Generalísimo ) and reached the UEFA Cup final in 1977 . Iribar was awarded the Trofeo Zamora in 1970 as the goalkeeper with the fewest goals conceded in the preseason.
In total, Iribar completed 49 international matches for his country. He took part in the 1966 World Cup and was in goal in all preliminary round matches, including the 1: 2 defeat against West Germany . His greatest success was probably winning the European Championship in 1964 .
In December 1976 before the league match against Real Sociedad , Iribar and hoisted sociedads captain Ignacio Kortabarria the Ikurriña (the flag of the Basque Country) in the center circle. This was the first public display of the flag since General Franco's death . Iribar ended his career in 1980 after 466 league games for Athletic and moved to the coaching staff. From 1983 to 1986 he coached Bilbao's second team in the Segunda División and the first team in the 1986/87 season. Iribar has been coaching the Basque football team since 1999 .
For many, he is the best Basque goalkeeper of all time and also a symbol of Athletic Bilbao.
