Ignacio Zoco (1971)

Ignacio Zoco Esparza (born July 31, 1939 in Garde , Roncal Valley , † September 28, 2015 in Madrid ) was a Spanish football player .

career

Originally from the small Pyrenean village of Garde, Zoco began his football career in Pamplona at CD Oberena . The most important club in the region, CA Osasuna , quickly became aware of him and signed Zoco in 1959. After two strong years in the Primera División , Real Madrid, coached by Miguel Muñoz , signed the then 22-year-old defensive player as part of the squad restructuring. Stars like Alfredo Di Stéfano or Ferenc Puskás had passed their zenith and slowly had to be replaced at this point. To this end, young footballers such as Amancio , Pirri , Manuel Sanchís (senior) and Zoco were signed up, as well as talented young players from the club such as Ramón Grosso and Manuel Velázquez were integrated into the team. After numerous national successes, this team, made up only of Spaniards and nicknamed "el Madrid yé-yé" , won the European Cup in the 1965/66 season .

National team

Ignacio Zoco won with the Spanish national team the 1964 European Nations' Cup . He also took part in the 1966 World Cup, but retired with his team in the preliminary round.
