In the Year of the Pig is a 1968 documentary by US director and producer Emile de Antonio about the causes of the Vietnam War . The film was nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Documentary” category.
The title of the film refers to the "year of the pig" in the Chinese calendar . It is shot in black and white and consists largely of original film and interview material from over 40 years of Vietnamese history , from the French colonial rule to the Vietnam War. Among other things, it shows the dramatic clash between the “ American way of life ” and the Vietnamese- Buddhist world. Interviews with numerous prominent politicians, scientists, journalists and soldiers are woven into the film.
Since In the Year of the Pig was made during the hottest phase of the Vietnam War and showed the audience a side of the war and the country that the US media had never seen before, the film met with some vehement criticism and polemics - up to and including to bomb threats against the cinemas showing it.

“Emile de Antonio's documentary is one of the classics of political cinema. He assembles documentary material mainly from newsreels into a partisan chronicle of the US intervention in Vietnam. The montage of the disparate recordings and reports alone makes it clear how contradictingly and deliberately incorrectly political representatives presented the American policy on Vietnam. You can also feel the American filmmaker's partisanship for the Viet Cong liberation movement and for conscientious objectors in their own country. "
