Stephen Addiss
Stephen "Steve" Addiss (* 1935 in New York City ) is an American art historian, musician, composer, poet, painter, graphic artist, calligrapher and ceramicist.
Act
Addiss first studied composition with Walter Piston at Harvard University (Bachelor 1957) and with John Cage , with whom he was friends until his death in 1992, at the New School in New York. For seventeen years he worked as a guitarist and singer with the folk singer Bill Crofut . As Addiss & Crofut , they toured Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States, appeared on television shows and released 14 LPs.
Starting in 1971, Addiss took part in the graduate program of the University of Michigan , earning masters and doctoral degrees in Asian art history and musicology. In 1977 he began teaching at the University of Kansas , and from 1992 until his retirement he held the Tucker Boatwright Professorship in Art at the University of Richmond . He is the editor and author of numerous books on Japanese and Chinese art and culture and has organized exhibitions on the subject.
In addition to compositions and arrangements for the Addiss & Crofut duo , Addiss also composed chamber music, songs and drama music. His paintings, graphics and calligraphic works have been shown at exhibitions in China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, England, France, Germany, Austria and the USA. He was also known as the author of haikus and haigas (a combination of haikus with pictures) and as a ceramist.
