Arcade courtyard of the Palais Selb

The Palais Selb in Vienna ( Graben No. 14, corner of Bräunerstraße ) was a house built after 1566, outwardly inconspicuous but equipped with a splendid Renaissance courtyard in Vienna's old town.

The magnificent arcade courtyard with a spiral staircase was a sight. The name Selb'sches Palais comes from the fact that the house was inherited from 1673 in the family of Johann Gabriel Freiherr von Selb, Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna. From the balcony of the first floor of this house, in 1804, Franz I's decision to proclaim himself Emperor of Austria was announced. A Viennese construction company bought the building in the early 1870s. It was demolished together with its neighboring house, No. 15, and in 1874 the Grabenhof was built instead.
