Luis María Echeberría Igartua (born March 24, 1940 in Asúa ; † October 19, 2016 ) was a Basque- Spanish football player who was active in the position of a defender.

Career

The defender took his first steps in everyday football at the Spanish provincial club CD Getxo in the town of Getxo near Bilbao . In 1961, at the age of 21, he moved to the Primera División for Athletic Bilbao , where he soon became a regular. With the traditional club from northern Spain, Echeberría won the Spanish Cup in 1969. In total, Echeberría appeared 257 times for Bilbao. He scored a goal. He stayed with Athletic until 1972, then at the end of his career he moved to Barakaldo CF , where he ended his career a year later.

In the national team of his home country Echeberría was used 4 times. With Spain he took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile , where the Iberians, who were among the favorites, failed without a hitch in the preliminary round. A second World Cup tournament was denied to the defender, he made his last game for Spain in 1963. He was nominated for the 1964 European Football Championship , but was not used.
