Amancio Amaro Varela (born October 16, 1939 in A Coruña , Galicia ) is a former Spanish football player and coach . Because of his legendary dribbles, he was nicknamed El Brujo (The Witcher) while at Real Madrid . To this day he is considered by many to be the most technically gifted Spanish football player of all time.
Player career
society
Amancio began his career at the age of 15 in his hometown, with the small club Victoria , before moving to the then second division Deportivo La Coruña in 1958 . When the Galicians were promoted to the Primera División, the eyes of the big teams began to turn to the gifted technician Amancio. In 1962 he moved to Real Madrid , despite his (for the time astronomical) salary of 10 million pesetas .
The club from the Spanish capital was in a restructuring phase at that time, many of the stars of the 1950s had left and coach Miguel Muñoz tried to make acquisitions from young talent and one or the other (at the same time as Amancio, players such as Ignacio Zoco and Lucien Muller came ) to form a powerful force.
National success was not long in coming, as Amancio was able to celebrate the Spanish championship with Real in his first season . Internationally, the first title was not won until 1966, when the “Royal” after five years of lean spell once again won the most important continental competition with the European Champions Cup . Amancio himself scored the equalizer in the 2-1 win in the final against FK Partizan Belgrade after a remarkable dribble.
The right winger ended his career in 1976 after 14 years with Real Madrid. At times he played with Real legends such as Alfredo di Stefano , Francisco Gento and Ferenc Puskás and led the club as team captain on the field. Amancio scored 21 goals for Real in the national champions' cup (today: UEFA Champions League), placing him in fifth place among the top scorers.
National team
With the Spanish national team , Amancio played a total of 42 games and scored 11 goals. The right winger made his international debut on November 25, 1962 in a 3-1 win over Romania . In 1964, the offensive player from national coach José Villalonga was appointed to the squad for the European Football Championship in his own country. In the final round of the tournament, Amancio became one of the key figures on his team. In the semi-final against Hungary , the attacker scored the 2-1 winner in extra time. In the final game Amanico was on the field for the full season and was able to celebrate the first European championship victory for his country after the 2-1 success against the USSR . Two years later he was in the Spanish squad at the World Cup in England, but could not prevent the preliminary round from his country. During the course of the tournament, Amancio was used in two of three group games and was able to score one goal. Amancio was last used in the dress of the national team on February 13, 1974 in the Frankfurt Waldstadion against Yugoslavia .

Career as a trainer and board member
Amancio moved to the Real Madrid coaching staff after finishing his career as a player, but left the club after just one year as a youth coach. Only under President Luis de Carlos , he returned again in 1982 as coach of Real and took over the second team, Castilla CF . In his second season Amancio won the championship title in the Segunda División with this team , a great success for a team consisting of young amateurs. It was he who led the legendary Quinta del Buitre , a great talent year consisting of the five players Emilio Butragueño , Míchel , Manolo Sanchís , Rafael Martín Vázquez and Miguel Pardeza into the first team.
For the 1984/85 season he himself took over the first team, but had to vacate his post again in April 1985 because of the unsuccessful championship - Real Madrid ended up with 5th place, the worst result since the 1973/74 season ; Amancio was replaced by Luis Molowny .
After a stint at the Spanish sporting goods manufacturer Kelme , he returned to Real Madrid in 2000 as a board member under President Florentino Pérez .
