Manuel Fernández Fernández , better known as Pahiño , (born January 21, 1923 in Vigo , † June 12, 2012 in Madrid ) was a Spanish football player .

Career

Pahiño began his career with the small clubs in his region, Navia and Arenas de Alcabre .

At the age of 19 he first moved to the youth of the then first division leader Celta Vigo , but was soon able to secure a place in the first team. The two-legged and strong header Pahiño quickly made a name for himself as one of the best strikers in the Spanish league and so he won the Pichichi trophy for the most successful goalscorer in the 1947/48 season .

In the following season he moved, together with his team-mate Miguel Muñoz , to Real Madrid , where he scored a total of 108 goals in five seasons. Despite the fact that he established himself as one of the best strikers in Spain, he could not win a single title with the capitals. In 1953, at the time when Alfredo Di Stéfano was committed, Pahiño left the club and moved to Deportivo La Coruña .

He spent three more seasons in his Galician homeland before the then 33-year-old striker moved to the second division FC Granada and promptly contributed to promotion to the Primera División .

Although Pahiño could not win a single title and only played three times for the Spanish national team, with his 210 league goals he is still one of the most successful goal scorers in Spanish football history. In an interview in 2009 he blamed his image of being a “red” (left-wing) footballer, which was problematic under the Franco dictatorship , for not being nominated for the 1950 World Cup.
