Agustín Sauto Arana , called Bata (born May 11, 1908 in Barakaldo , † August 21, 1986 in Bilbao ), was a Spanish football player ( striker ). He played for Athletic Bilbao and was one of Spain's most famous players in the 1930s.

Club career

Bata began his career at the provincial club Unión de San Vicente de Barakaldo , where he had also played in his youth. After one season he moved to the relatively well-known Basque club FC Barakaldo . At that time, the Primera División had not yet been established. The highest league was the Basque. In this it was played out which teams were allowed to start in the Copa del Rey .

The introduction of the Primera División took place in the 1928/29 season . Bata initially stayed with Barakaldo and landed in the third division with the team in penultimate place. For the 1929/30 season he moved to Athletic Bilbao in the Primera División. In his first season he was only a replacement and came on only seven missions and one goal. So he had no special part in it, but Athletic was champion in 1930, undefeated at that.

The 1930/31 season marked the final breakthrough for Bata, who scored 27 goals in just 17 games, seven of them in the 12-1 win against FC Barcelona , the highest win in the history of the league to date. At the end of the season he was the top scorer for the only time in his career and helped his team to defend their title.

Bilbao's dominance in the Copa del Rey was even clearer : from 1930 to 1933, the Basques won this prestigious cup competition four times in a row. With the exception of the first final game, Bata was always part of the regular formation of his team. In 1932 he scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win against FC Barcelona . The cup win in 1933 was his last with Athletic. The Basques did not win the next Cup until 1943.

Sauto Arana was able to win other titles in the league. In 1934 and 1936 he and his team became Spanish champions. In the 1935/36 season he again managed the feat of scoring more goals than he played in games (21 goals in 20 games). Then regular game operations were interrupted for three years due to the Spanish Civil War.

After the end of the war, Bata decided against returning to the Primera División at the age of 31. Instead, he let his career at FC Barakaldo end in the Segunda División .

National team

Although Bata was undoubtedly one of the best strikers in Spain at the time, he was only called up to the Spanish national team once . This was against Italy on April 19, 1931, fittingly at a "home game" for Bata. The venue was namely San Mamés , the stadium of Athletic Bilbao . The game ended goalless 0-0.

As usual for good Basque players, he also played for the Basque national team . To this day, it has played friendly matches with other regional teams from Spain, but also with foreign teams.
