José Eulogio Gárate Ormaechea (born September 20, 1944 in Sarandí , Argentina ) is a former Spanish - Argentinian football player .

Career

society

Garate arrived in Argentina as the son of Basque parents and grew up in Eibar on. He started his career at SD Eibar and moved to SD Indautxu after two seasons before he was finally discovered by Atlético Madrid . Here he was part of the legendary Atlético team, alongside greats like Luis Aragonés , Adelardo and Javier Irureta , which won the Spanish championship three times , the Copa del Rey twice and the 1974 World Cup in the 1970s . Furthermore, the team reached the final of the European Cup in 1974 , which was lost to FC Bayern Munich .

Gárate had an excellent eye for goals and won the Pichichi trophy three times in a row from 1969 to 1971 .

National team

On October 22, 1967 Gárate came to his first appearance in the Spanish national team and immediately contributed a goal to the 2-1 victory over Czechoslovakia . By 1975 he played a total of 18 internationals. However, since Spain was unable to qualify for either a European or a World Cup during this period , he never took part in a major final tournament.

Gárates not cheering

In a sidelight in the Süddeutsche Zeitung on June 17, 2019, Gárate was highlighted as a player who did not cheer after scoring a goal. It is further stated: "The poet Javier Marías wrote of Gárate : 'He did not humiliate his opponent with his joy, but rather seemed to ask his forgiveness for the annoyance caused and the loss of the bonus.'"
