Juan Arza Íñigo (born June 12, 1923 in Estella , † July 17, 2011 in Seville ) was a Spanish football player and coach .

Player career

society

In his youth Arza played for CD Izarra , his hometown club. Due to his great talent, he quickly made a name for himself. Not even of legal age, he already completed a trial session with the first division club Espanyol Barcelona . Although the club's officials gave the green light for a signing, Arza refused to move to the Catalans due to the great distance to his hometown. When he was courted by Deportivo Alavés a short time later , he only accepted their offer on the condition that he could go home every day after training.

Thanks to his convincing appearances at Alavés, it wasn't long before the big clubs knocked on his door again. In 1942 he finally moved to CD Málaga in the Segunda División . Although he also demonstrated his class here, the club from Andalusia was relegated at the end of the season. With Malaga now facing financial problems, the club were forced to put Arza on the transfer list. Thereupon this rejected a new offer from Espanyol Barcelona as well as an offer from Real Madrid . Instead, he moved to Sevilla FC in 1943 for almost 90,000 pesetas and signed a five-year contract with the first division club.

In Seville , the 20-year-old received full trust from coach Patrick O'Connell from the start . Accordingly, his debut took place on the first day of the 1943/44 season . Sevilla faced CE Sabadell and won 5-2 thanks to three goals from Arza. As a result, the young Spaniard was nicknamed "El niño de oro" (German: "golden boy") by his coach. At the end of the season, Arza had scored 17 goals in 25 games. Seville finished third.

The following season was disappointing. Although Arza scored another 13 goals in 25 games, Sevilla only ended up in tenth place at the end of the season. Then coach O'Connell was dismissed and replaced by the Spaniard Ramón Encinas . With the new coach, Sevilla became Spanish champions for the first time in the club's history in the 1945/46 season - also thanks to 14 goals from Arza. In 1948 , Sevilla also won the Copa del Rey .

Subsequently, Arza achieved mostly average results with his club. Exceptions were the years 1951 and 1955, when Seville was runner-up and reached the cup final (0-1 against Athletic Bilbao ). Arza achieved a personal success in the 1954/55 season , when he left players like Alfredo Di Stéfano and Manuel Badenes in the top scorer list with 29 goals and became the top scorer .

With another runner-up in the 1956/57 season , Sevilla FC took part in the European Cup for the first time in the following year , as champions Real Madrid were already automatically qualified as defending champions. This is how Arza first stepped onto the European football stage at the age of 35. He played a total of five European Cup games. Seville failed after victories over Benfica Lisbon and Aarhus GF in the quarterfinals to Real Madrid.

At the end of the 1958/59 season Arza left Sevilla FC after 16 years of club membership. For the Andalusians, the Spaniard scored 182 goals in 349 first division games. No other player in the club has scored as many goals in the Primera División to date .

After a final season at Atlético Almería , Arza finally ended his career in 1960. In 1965 he played a farewell game against FC Barcelona players with former colleagues from Sevilla FC . The game ended 4-3 for Sevilla in front of over 30,000 spectators.

National team

Despite his accuracy, Arza only played two internationals for the Spanish national team . He made his debut on March 2, 1947 against Ireland . He played his second and last international match on June 8, 1952 against Turkey .

Coaching career

After his career as a soccer player, Arza took over the coaching job at Real Linense for a short time .

In the 1965/66 season , Sevilla FC dismissed coach Ignacio Eizaguirre five game days before the end in acute relegation difficulty . Then Arza was asked to save the club from the impending disaster. The Spaniard could not refuse his former club this request. With the club legend on board, Sevilla started an impressive winning streak. At the end of the season, the club qualified eighth for the trade fair trophy . Despite this success, Arza refused to work beyond the end of the season.

Almost a year later, however, the situation was similar to that of the previous year. Sevilla faced relegation again. After coach Sabino Barinaga was dismissed, Arza was contacted again. Although this time they had to be relegated, in the end the club was able to keep the class again with two 1-0 wins over Real Gijón . Then Arza vacated his post again.

In the 1967/68 season the situation was even more hopeless. For the third time in a row, Arza was called in to rescue. But this time the Spaniard was unsuccessful. Seville got down. Nevertheless, the club's management tried to keep Arza as a coach. With the failure in the neck, this time agreed. Thereupon succeeded in the season 1968/69 as first table of the Segunda División the immediate rise.

From 1970 to 1972 Arza worked as the coach of Celta Vigo and took part with the club in 1971 for the first time in the UEFA Cup .

After the relegation of FC Sevilla in the 1971/72 season , Arza gave up his coaching post at Celta Vigo in order to return to his old place of work again and again to tackle promotion. When people already felt they were on the right path, the Seville actor Pedro Berruezo collapsed during a game on January 7, 1973 and died. The team was unable to recover from this tragic incident. So at the end of the season they just missed promotion to fourth place. Arza stepped back.

After further positions at Deportivo La Coruña and Celta Vigo , the Spaniard ended his coaching career.
