Baltazar Maria de Moráis Junior , Baltazar for short (born June 17, 1959 in Goiânia , Brazil ) is a former Brazilian soccer player .
Career
society
Baltazar started his career with his hometown club Atlético Goianiense . At the age of 20 he switched to Gremio . With the club from Porto Alegre , he won the final of the Brazilian championship against São Paulo in 1981 . After an inconspicuous year at Palmeiras , he moved to Flamengo and won the championship again in 1983. After further interludes at Palmeiras and Botafogo , Baltazar finally made the leap to Europe in 1985 with his move to Celta Vigo . With the newly minted first division club, however, he promptly relegated to the Segunda División . Here the Brazilian advanced to the top scorer of the league with 34 goals and was thus significantly involved in the resurgence of the Celtiñas . Since he also convinced in the Primera División the following year and secured relegation early with his club, he soon attracted the interest of some big clubs.
For the 1988/89 season he then moved to Atlético Madrid . In the Spanish capital, he scored 35 goals straight away. With this, Baltazar secured the Pichichi trophy by a large margin and his club took part in the UEFA Cup . In the following season he was used less and less under coach Javier Clemente . Nevertheless, with 18 goals he was again among the top three goalscorers in the league. Shortly after the beginning of the 1990/91 season Atlético signed the German midfielder Bernd Schuster . Since Spanish clubs were only allowed to appoint three foreigners to the team at the time, a change of club was suggested to Baltazar. He then played in Portugal and France for a few years before ending his career in Brazil and Japan.
National team
Baltazar ran for the first time in 1980 for the Brazilian national soccer team . Then he was only called up after his successful first season at Atlético Madrid again in the Seleção and won the 1989 Copa America with this .
