Carles Rexach Cerdà (born January 13, 1947 in Barcelona , Catalonia ) is a former Spanish professional footballer and coach . Rexach remained loyal to FC Barcelona throughout his playing career and worked as a scout , assistant coach and head coach for this club even after his active career .

Player career

Carles Rexach started at the age of 12 in the youth department of FC Barcelona, for which he was to be active for a total of 22 years. He made his professional debut in 1965 at the age of 18 against Racing Santander in the Copa del Generalissimo (now Copa del Rey ) and scored the fourth goal in his team's 4-0 victory.

He played in the reserve team for the next two years before moving to the first team in 1967. There the fast winger developed into an absolute regular player of the 1970s and one of the best players in the Primera División . In the 1970/71 season Rexach was together with José Eulogio Gárate top scorer in the Spanish league with 17 goals in 29 games ( Pichichi trophy ).

After signing the Dutch star player Johan Cruyff , FC Barcelona won the championship again in 1974 for the first time in 14 years. Cruyff and Rexach subsequently formed a strong duo. Rexach scored all three goals in the 1975 European Cup against Feyenoord Rotterdam , all of which were prepared by Cruyff. In 1979 Rexach won the European Cup Winners' Cup with FC Barcelona and also scored in the final against Fortuna Düsseldorf . In 1981 he ended his playing career in which he scored 81 goals in 328 games for Barcelona.

As a national player, Rexach made 15 international matches (2 goals) and took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina .

Coaching career

In the 1987/88 season Rexach was assistant coach under Luis Aragonés at FC Barcelona. When he was dismissed, Rexach acted as interim coach for a short time before Johan Cruyff became head coach for the 1988/89 season and Rexach moved back into the second tier. Cruyff built FC Barcelona into the best club team in Europe ( Dream Team ). When Cruyff failed in 1991 with a heart attack , Rexach took over the team again and became Spanish champions. In the 1996 season, Cruyff was fired and Rexach stepped in again as an interim solution. Under coach Bobby Robson , Rexach worked as a scout for the club before taking care of the Yokohama wings in the Japanese J-League in the 1998/99 season .

After Llorenç Serra Ferrer's sacking , Rexach returned to his old love, FC Barcelona, and coached the team for the last seven games of the 2000/01 season. After a spectacular 3-2 win over Valencia CF , he led the team to fourth place in the table and thus to qualifying for the UEFA Champions League .

During this time, Rexach discovered and signed the then thirteen-year-old Lionel Messi , who was named World Footballer of the Year four times in a row from 2009 to 2012.

President Joan Gaspart gave Rexach the responsibility as coach for the following season, but Rexach fell short of expectations with 4th place in the league and elimination in the semi-finals of the Champions League against big rivals Real Madrid . Therefore, he was released at the end of the 2001/02 season and replaced by Louis van Gaal .
