The Primera División 2016/17 (officially LaLiga Santander ) was the 86th season of the top Spanish division in football . It started on August 19, 2016 and ended on May 21, 2017.
Real Madrid became Spanish champions for the 33rd time.
Before the season
FC Barcelona started the season as defending champions .
The three relegated members of the preseason Rayo Vallecano , Getafe FC (both from Madrid and the surrounding area) and UD Levante (from Valencia) were no longer represented in the Primera División . After ten years of abstinence, Deportivo Alavés , a 2001 UEFA Cup finalist , managed to return to the Primera División as champions, after the club had only been third-rate from 2009 to 2013. For the first time in the top Spanish league was CD Leganés from near Madrid. Third promoted was CA Osasuna from Pamplona , who was able to secure promotion in the playoff games and thus returned to the first division after two years.
With the resurgence of Deportivo Alavés, the Basque Country is represented with four clubs in the Primera División for the first time since 1933, four clubs also came from Andalusia.
