The Estadio de Gran Canaria is a football stadium that is located in the Spanish city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Gran Canaria . It serves as the home ground of the UD Las Palmas football club .
history
The Gran Canaria Stadium was officially opened in 2003 with a game between UD Las Palmas and RSC Anderlecht (2: 1) and replaced the old Estadio Insular , which opened in 1949 . As is often the case in Spain, the stadium is only covered on the main stand. The building has a bowl-like shape that is not closed only in the north curve. There is also a large video scoreboard there. There is space for 400 journalists in the press stand. There are 350 parking spaces available in the building and a further 5,000 spaces around the stadium. The stadium's equipment meets the requirements of the world football association FIFA and the world athletics association IAAF .
From November to the end of 2015, the stadium was converted into a football stadium for around four million euros . For this purpose, the athletics facility in front of the grandstands in the south, east and west was removed and the stands extended to the edge of the field. After the work, the venue will have 32,392 seats, making it the largest stadium in the Canary Islands . The spectators were previously 27.30 meters from the pitch. Today it is only 7.30 meters.
