Joan Manuel Serrat (born December 27, 1943 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish singer-songwriter who sings in both Catalan and Spanish.

Live and act

Serrat is one of the most important songwriters in Spain in the last few decades. His work includes the musical arrangement of various poets, including Mario Benedetti , Antonio Machado , Miguel Hernández , Rafael Alberti , Federico García Lorca , Pablo Neruda and León Felipe .

In 1968 he was withdrawn from the Eurovision Song Contest by the Spanish television broadcaster TVE because he wanted to sing in Catalan the song La, la, la , originally written in Spanish by Ramon Arcusa and Manuel da la Calva . Under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco he emigrated to Mexico in 1975 , but returned to his homeland the following year after Franco's death.

One of his compositions, Llegó con tres heridas , also received international acclaim and was recorded by Joan Baez and Nana Mouskouri , among others . Together with Joaquín Sabina he recorded the albums Dos pájaros de un tiro (2007) and La Orchestra del Titanic (2012).

In May 2015 he was awarded the Premio Iberoamericano de la Música "Cortes de Cádiz" .
