Andrés Calamaro Masel (born August 22, 1961 in Buenos Aires ), also known only as Calamaro , is an Argentine musician and composer. His former band Los Rodríguez had great success in Spain in the 1990s .

Abuelos de la Nada

At the age of eight, calamaro, bandoneon and tambor, a drum, began to play. Electric guitar and piano followed when he was 13, and when he was 17 he took part in the recording of an album by the Raíces group as a guest . Shortly afterwards he founded his own band, the Elmer's Band , with his guitarist friend, Gringui Herrera. Her song Tristeza de la Ciudad (Sadness of the City) became a hit.

When Miguel Abuelo returned to Argentina from Los Abuelos de la Nada , he gathered the old musicians back together and invited Calamaro to play the keyboard. The band had great success; Calamaro wrote some of her greatest hits, such as Sin gamulán , Mil horas and Costumbres argentinas , and also started singing for them.

separation

Before Los Abuelos de la Nada broke up , Calamaro recorded his first solo album in 1984, Hotel Calamaro . A second album, Vida Cruel , was recorded shortly after the band split up and received good reviews but had little commercial success.

After a third album, Por Mirarte (1988), Calamaro began producing for other bands like Los Fabulosos Cadillacs , Los Enanitos Verdes and soloists like Fabiana Cantilo.

At the end of the 1980s Calamaro had his own band with his old friends Gringui Herrera and Ariel Rot, who had just returned from Spain. The trio recorded the album Nadie sale vivo de aquí in 1989 with a number of guest musicians.

Los Rodríguez

Because of the poor economic situation in Argentina, Calamaro and Rot moved to Spain. There they founded the band Los Rodríguez with Julián Infante. Germán Villela joined on drums. The band didn't have a bass player, but Guillermo Martin, Candi Avello and later Daniel Zamora accompanied them on recordings and tours.

Los Rodríguez had three successful studio albums: Buena suerte (1991), Sin documentos (1993) and Palabras más, palabras menos (1995), as well as the live album Disco pirata (1992) and the compilation of songs Hasta luego (1996).

Sin documentos brought international success with its mixture of flamenco and Latin American rhythms. They toured in Spain and Latin America.

solo

During his collaboration with Los Rodríguez, Andrés Calamaro compiled Grabaciones Encontradas . After Palabras más, palabras menos , the band released a "Greatest Hits" album, which sold well. Then the band broke up.

In 1997 Calamaro Alta took up suciedad , of which more than half a million copies were sold. Again he toured Latin America.

Calamaro began to write song after song. In six months he had finished over 100 songs. 37 of them were included in the next album, Honestidad brutal . Te quiero igual , Paloma , Los aviones , Cuando te conocí and La parte de adelante became hits. The double CD was recorded after the separation from his girlfriend, which is reflected in all the songs. The album also includes a collaboration with Maradona .

In 2000 he recorded 103 songs for his album El salmón with five CDs.

Free music

In the following years Calamaro took part in many concerts and recordings as a guest. He posted unpublished songs from 2001-2002 for free download on the Internet, stating that "Music belongs to those who want to hear it and nobody else" .

His home recordings are freely available on the DeepCamboya page. Because of the poor quality of the recordings, a group of fans reworked them with the author's permission and posted them online on their website Camisetas Para Todos . Calamaro launched Radio Salmón Vaticano , a virtual recording studio, on its website.

In 2004 he released El Cantante , an album with covers of tangos and other Latin American rhythms and some of his songs published on the Internet.

return

In 2005 he published El Regreso (The Return), a compilation of live recordings of his first appearances at Luna Park Stadium that same year. The album was presented in front of 20,000 listeners at the Obras Sanitarias Stadium. In 2006 Calamaro won the Gardel prizes for Best Rock Album by a Male Artist and Best Album Cover , and he also received the main Golden Gardel prize .

He then published Tinta Roja , a collection of classic tangos such as El día que me quieras , Como dos extraños and Sur . He recorded El Palacio de las Flores with Litto Nebbia , and in 2007 La Lengua Popular . This was followed by Raíces 30 Años with the band Raíces in 2008 and 2009, the solo anthology Andrés with 6 CDs.
