history
The association was founded on August 22, 1949 through the merger of the five clubs CD Gran Canaria, Atlético Club, Club Victoria, Arenas Club and Marino CF. Their former coats of arms can still be found today on the bottom of the club's logo.
In October 1949 the club began to take part in official competitions with the best players from the club's founders. Within just two years, he was promoted to the Spanish first division. Two years in the top division were followed by two seasons in the Segunda División from 1952 before they managed to rise again and could stay in the first division for six years. The second relegation followed in the 1959/60 season.
After the third promotion in the 1964/1965 season, the club's most successful period began. In the following 19 years they played uninterruptedly in the first division, among other things, they were runner-up in 1969 and reached the cup final in 1978, in which, however, they were defeated by FC Barcelona . In 1968 they were closest to winning the championship when they finished third, just four points behind the champions.
Furthermore, UD Las Palmas also played in international competitions. First in 1969 in the Messestädte Cup and later in the UEFA Cup in the 1972/73 and 1977/78 seasons. In addition, six players from the Canary Islands played in the Spanish national team: Tonono, Juan Guedes, Castellano, Germán, Martín Marrero and Felipe.
In 1983 they were relegated again to the second division, but returned to the first division after two years. Another relegation in 1988 was the beginning of a very bad phase for the club. In 1992 the crash into the third division followed and the existence of the club was trembled. But they survived this difficult situation and returned to the second division in 1996 and the first division in 2000.
The club played in the Primera División until 2002, in which they had spent a total of 31 years. After that, financial problems occurred again, which in 2003/04 repeatedly led to relegation to the third division. Again the club was close to the end, but UD Las Palmas could be saved again and managed to return to the Segunda División in the 2005/06 season. The club regularly fought against relegation there, but was always able to hold the class and ended the 2007/08 season in 8th place, as they were the third best team in the second half of the season after they were nine points behind a non-relegation place in the first half of the season would have. In the 2012/2013 season, UD Las Palmas even reached the play-off games for promotion to the Primera División, but failed against UD Almería .
In the 2013/14 season Las Palmas landed in 6th place in the Segunda División. In the following play-offs for promotion to the first division, they reached the final against FC Córdoba . After a 0-0 in the first leg, Las Palmas led in the second leg in front of their home crowd after a goal by Apoño shortly after the break with 1-0, which would have meant promotion, but in the 90 + 10. In the minute, Cordoba scored the 1-1 and was promoted instead. The long stoppage time came about as fans of UD Las Palmas stormed the pitch.
In the following season 2014/15 Las Palmas landed in 4th place and qualified for the play-offs again. After a 1-1 draw in Valladolid and a 0-0 second leg, the Gran Canaria team made it to the final again, but suffered a bitter 3-1 defeat at Real Saragossa in the first leg . In the second leg, however, Las Palmas started to catch up: Roque Mesa scored the 1-0 in the 33rd minute and Sergio Araujo shot UD Las Palmas back into the Primera División in the 84th minute after 13 years.
UD Las Palmas finished 19th in the Primera Division at the end of the 2017/18 season and was relegated to League 2 after three years of first class.
Players like Valerón , Manuel Pablo , Guayre , Jorge Larena , Vitolo , Rubén Castro and Ángel López , who later switched to better sporting clubs, come from the youth of Las Palmas . The second team from Las Palmas made it to the third division in the 2007/08 season, but rose again after losing to the second team from Sporting Gijón .
