Heriberto Herrera Udrizal (born March 24, 1926 in Guarambaré , † July 26, 1996 in Asunción ) was a Paraguayan football player and coach .

During his time as a coach, he was also known as the "Iron Sergeant" because of his stubbornness . In addition to the Paraguayan, Herrera also had Spanish citizenship.

Career

As a player

Heriberto Herrera began his professional career at Club Nacional in his Paraguayan homeland. From 1952 to 1959 he was under contract with the Spanish club Atlético Madrid .

With the Paraguayan national team , the defender won the Copa America after beating Brazil 3-2 in the final in 1953 . Herrera was voted the best player of the tournament. On March 10, 1957, he completed his only international match for Spain in a 2-2 draw against Switzerland .

As a trainer

Herrera began his coaching career in Spain, where he a. a. the Elche CF and Espanyol looked after. From 1964 to 1969 he coached Juventus Turin and led the team to win the Coppa Italia in 1964/65 and to the Italian championship in 1966/67 . In the finals of the trade fair cup , his Bianconeri had to admit defeat 0: 1 at the Stadio Comunale Ferencváros in Budapest in 1964/65 .

In the 1969/70 season Herrera supervised Inter Milan and reached second place in Serie A with the Nerazzurri . At the beginning of the following season he was fired, his successor Giovanni Invernizzi led Inter to win the championship in 1970/71. After two further positions in Italy at Sampdoria Genua and Atalanta Bergamo , Heriberto Herrera returned to Spain in 1975, where he worked until 1982 a. a. worked at FC Valencia and UD Las Palmas .
