The Club Nacional is a football club from Asunción , the capital of Paraguay . The club was founded in 1904 and, along with Club Olimpia , Club Guaraní , Club Libertad and Club General Díaz, is one of the clubs that initiated the Liga Paraguaya de Football Association in 1906 , from which today's national football association, the Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol, developed.

The club was founded in 1905 by former students of the Colegio Nacional de la Capital , one of the oldest private schools in the country, under the name Nacional Football Club . The colors of the flag of Paraguay were chosen as the club colors. The white and blue colors of the jerseys are the colors of the school.

Nacional won Paraguay six times between 1909 and 1946. As the second Paraguayan club ever, Nacional reached the final of the Copa Libertadores in 2014 , which marks its greatest international success. After a 1: 1 in the final first leg in Asunción, the club lost 1: 1 in the decisive second leg in Buenos Aires against the Argentine representative Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro .

The club is also called La Academia because of its traditionally good youth work . The star of the club's history Arsenio Erico , who is also regarded as the greatest football player in Paraguay's history, also came from the offspring of Nacional. He played from 1930 to 33 and from 1947 to 49 for Nacional. In between he played in Argentina for the suburban club CA Independiente, where he became the record goal scorer in Argentinian football history.

Nacional plays its home games at the Estadio Arsenio Erico named after him , known primarily as La Visera , in the Barrio Obrero district of Asunción. The stadium has a capacity of 10,000 spectators.
