The Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol (abbr .: APF ) is the national football association of Paraguay . It is based in the capital Asunción . The association was founded on June 18, 1906 as the Liga Paraguaya de Football Association by the clubs Club Olimpia , Club Guaraní , Club Libertad , Club General Díaz and Club Nacional to hold the national football championship, which took place for the first time that same year . Soon after it was founded, the name of the association was transferred to the Spanish language as Liga Paraguaya de Fútbol . In 1996 the association was given its current name. The Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol should not be confused with the "Rebel League ", which was also named from 1916 to its end of 1917, was founded in 1911 as the Liga Centenario and existed until 1917.

National championships

The federation is responsible for the organization of the national championships like the Primera División de Paraguay and the national teams like those of the men and women . He's also overseeing futsal and beach soccer these days .

International games

Paraguay took part in the Copa America for the first time in the same year , which was the fifth official hosting of the tournament. Since then, Paraguay has been involved in all 37 other playouts of the tournament up to and including 2011 with five exceptions. In 1953 and 1979 Paraguay managed to win this tournament and also finished second in 1929, 1947, 1949, 1963 and 2011 . In 1999 the association hosted the Copa América for the only time so far. The association of the country, which at the time had only around 1.5 million inhabitants, was asked to hold the competition , which was then still called Campeonato Sudamericano , for 1953, but this did not happen due to a lack of infrastructure, such as suitable stadiums. The tournament finally took place in Peru .

Paraguay took part in the first soccer world championship in Uruguay in 1930 . Further participations followed in 1930, 1950, 1958, 1986, 1998, 2002, 2006. The successful qualification for the 2010 World Cup secured the fourth participation in a row. In 2010 Paraguay managed to advance to the last eight of the World Cup for the first time, but narrowly failed because of the tournament winner Spain .

Paraguay's Olympic selection took second place at the 2004 Olympic Games and thus won the silver medal.
