The Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA) is the official football association of Argentina and was founded in 1893 as the Argentine Association Football League . This makes the association the first football association in South America and one of the oldest national football associations in the world. The association also became a member of FIFA in 1912 and has been a member of CONMEBOL since 1916 . The association has had its current name since 1934 (in 1946 only the spelling was changed from Football to Fútbol).

The association organizes national football, including the Primera División as the highest league in the country, and the national teams , the national cup , was reactivated in 2011 after a decade-long hiatus. The AFA is based in Buenos Aires .

In 1916 the association hosted the first CONMEBOL Campeonato Sudamericano , the South American Championship. After that, the AFA hosted eight further editions of this tournament ( 1921 , 1925 , 1929 , 1937 , 1946 , 1959 , 1987 and 2011 ) and is thus a record host. In 1978, the AFA hosted the FIFA World Cup .

In its history, the association had 55 presidents so far. Long-time president of the association was Julio Grondona from 1979 until his death on July 30, 2014 . Claudio Fabián Tapia has been the current president since 2017 .
