Julio Humberto Grondona (born September 18, 1931 in Avellaneda , † July 30, 2014 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine football official . He was President of the Argentine Football Association from 1979 until his death and a member of the FIFA Executive Committee for 26 years .

Career

With his brother Grondona founded the football club Arsenal de Sarandí in 1957 , which he presided over until 1976. He then became president of the CA Independiente football club for five years . In 1979 he was elected president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) for the first time . His last election for the ninth term was in October 2011.

Since 1988 he has been a member of the FIFA Executive Committee. He was of Joseph Blatter used immediately after taking office in 1998 as Chairman of the Finance Committee. This gave Grondona a complete insight into all of FIFA's financial affairs, including the FIFA President's finances. At his death, Grondona was the senior vice-president of the FIFA Executive Committee and thus senior vice-president.

Since 2011 he has been investigated in Argentina on suspicion of corruption, money laundering and tax evasion in the high double-digit million range. The processes were accelerated by documents that members of an Argentine TV marketing company passed on to the judiciary and the media and published accordingly. Grondona had initially worked with this company in his capacity as head of the football association of Argentina and was bribed by it, but then booted it out. There was never a criminal sentence against Grondona, neither in this criminal case nor in any of the other financial offenses of which he was accused.

Grondona died on July 30, 2014 after heart surgery in a hospital in Buenos Aires.
