The 1959 Campeonato Sudamericano was the 26th edition of the South American continental football championship and took place for the seventh time in Argentina from March 7th to April 4th. The winner was unbeaten and Argentina for the twelfth time, which further expanded its record. Argentina had won all their games up to the playoff against Brazil. Brazil, with its world star Pelé, had also won all matches except for the draw with Peru and therefore had to win the play-off against Argentina to win the title. The game did not get beyond a 1-1 draw and Argentina champions.

In the same year a second competition was held in Ecuador .

Participant and mode

Ecuador , Colombia and Venezuela did not participate.

The tournament was played in the league system as usual , with each of the seven teams having to play each other once. As in previous tournaments, some games were played one after the other as part of a double event on one day. If there was a tie in first place, a playoff was planned.

Venue and spectators

All games were played at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. For the third time in the history of the tournament, over a million spectators attended the games, even if the attendance record of the 1945 tournament in Chile was not reached.
