The Copa América 1991 was the 35th game of the South American continental championship in football and took place from July 6th to July 21st for the sixth time in Chile.
The mode of the event has not changed since the last event in 1989. Preliminary round and final round were each played in the league system (everyone against everyone). The preliminary round was played in two groups of five teams each. The best two teams in each group reached the final round. The group winner was again the tournament winner. In the event of a tie, the goal difference decided. Defending champion Brazil, like all other participants, had to compete in the preliminary round. Once again, all the games in the context of double events were played on one day in the same stadium.
Argentina became the undefeated South American champions and, with their 13th title, drew level with the previous record winners Uruguay. By winning the Copa América, Argentina qualified as representative of South America for the 1992 King Fahd Cup , the forerunner of the FIFA Confederations Cup .
