Choice of venue

According to the rotation principle of the South American football association CONMEBOL , which provides for all member associations to be held one after the other in alphabetical order, Brazil was originally supposed to host the Copa America 2015 and Chile the Copa America 2019. Due to hosting the Confederations Cup in 2013 , the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics , Brazil did not want to host the tournament. Brazil and Chile discussed an exchange, Chile should host 2015, Brazil 2019. On March 24, 2012, the presidents of the national football associations of Brazil and Chile announced a corresponding agreement. It has been confirmed by CONMEBOL.

In July 2018 it was announced that the originally planned match days (June 14th to July 7th) had been brought forward by one week and the final should take place on June 30th, 2019. On September 17, 2018, the association announced that it would stick to the original schedule.

Attendees

All ten CONMEBOL member associations were automatically qualified for the tournament. As twelve teams are required for the group stage, two additional participants were invited as in the past. In addition to Japan - which already participated in 1999 - this is also Qatar for the first time - World Cup host from 2022 . Mexico, which otherwise took part regularly, was not taken into account as the tournament overlapped with the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup .

Scandal

After being sent off in the third place match, Argentine Lionel Messi expressed strong criticism of the referee performance at the Copa América and what he thought the Brazilian federation had too much influence in CONMEBOL . “We shouldn't take part in this corruption. We are fed up with [...] the corruption, the referees and everything that spoils the spectacle. Corruption and the referees do not let fans enjoy football. ”CONMEBOL rejected the allegations as“ unacceptable ”and“ unfounded allegations ”. “In football you lose and sometimes you win. One of the cornerstones of fair play is to accept the results and the referee's decisions with respect. "
