The Book of Mormon Movie, Volume 1: The Journey. (Dt .: The Book of Mormon Movie - Part 1: The Journey ) is a film adaptation of the first two books of the Book of Mormon with Noah Danby as prophet Nephi in the lead role. Directed by Gary Rogers, the screenplay was written by the director himself with Craig Clyde . The world premiere took place on September 12, 2003 in several cinemas in Utah , USA.

action

The film is set in Jerusalem in 600 BC. Chr. , Ie, during the reign of King Zedekiah . It tells the story of the prophet Lehi, his wife Saria and their four sons Laman, Lemuel, Sam and Nephi. The film tells the journey of this family from the Middle East to the New World .

After Lehi had predicted the destruction of Jerusalem , he and his family had to flee to the desert-like surroundings of Jerusalem from angry residents who were trying to kill him. The family camps near Jerusalem. Lehi sends Nephi and his brothers back to Jerusalem to rescue Ishmael's family, friends, and Laban-owned, religious brass tablets with words of the ancient prophets from the city. This leads to a conflict between Nephi and Laban, of which the latter falls victim. Laban's now abandoned servant hands the brass tablets to Nephi and joins the group, as does the Ishmael family. Returning to Lehi in the desert with the brass tablets , the children of Lehi marry those of Ishmael.

Lehi has a dream which symbolically shows him the narrow path to Christ. Because of this dream, he calls Laman, Lemuel and Sam to submit to their brother Nephi, who is like himself a prophet. Laman and Lemuel would like to be the leaders of the community themselves and fight against Nephi until their father uses a word of power to calm the siblings. A little later, Nephi learns of the promised land in America in a divine vision .

Ishmael dies of old age and the community leaves their camp in the desert and migrates to the sea . One morning Lehi finds a magical object in front of his tent, the Liahona , which works like a compass to help them on their journey. Laman and Lemuel again rebel against their brother Nephi, but with the help of the power of God he makes them compliant. Together, the brothers build a ship with which they set sail in order to cross the sea to the promised land in America . On his deathbed in the promised land, Lehi last admonished his sons Laman and Lemuel to listen to Nephi. But the two try again to kill Nephi. This time Nephi and his devoted Sam flee into the wilderness, where the two begin to build a city. Sam learns that rebellious brothers Laman and Lemuel want to wage war against Nephi and his followers and have recruited an army. Concerned for his people, Nephi begins to prepare as well.

Filmed books

Two parts of the Book of Mormon , the first and second of Nephi , were filmed . A vision from Nephi also briefly shows Christ's visit to America, a scene from the third book of Nephi.

The opening credits show a meeting between Moroni and Joseph Smith where he receives the gold plates , which he then translates and publishes as the Book of Mormon .

background

Gary Rogers inspiration was the film The Ten Commandments (1956) by Cecil B. DeMille . Rogers thought of the Book of Mormon as a long, monumental historical film. His plan is to get the whole book out in nine films. The film was produced for only $ 1.5 million. He grossed $ 1,680,020 in the United States. The film lasts 2 hours. The DVD version shows that the first version was 2 hours and 40 minutes long.

Leading actor Danby had never read the Book of Mormon before making the film. He is a devout Lutheran and said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that he was uncomfortable with making the film because of religious differences during the filming, but that he accepted the offer to gain experience in acting.

The desert scenes were filmed in Utah in the spring. The “large and spacious building” was a 1.5 meter miniature. The ship in the scene in which the family reaches the promised land does not appear in the theatrical version, but was digitally added to the scene for the DVD version. The costume designer based his work on Mormon art and Mormon illustrations.

Soundtrack

Robert C. Bowden, the composer of the film, directed the Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus from 1974 until its end in 1999 . This choir belonged to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

The soundtrack was released in 2003. The composer is Robert C. Bowden.
