Néstor Fabián Pitana (born June 17, 1975 in Corpus , Misiones ) is an Argentine football referee and international referee for FIFA .

Career

Pitana's international career began in 2010, just three years after making his debut in the Argentine first division. In 2012 he led the final first leg of the Recopa Sudamericana , in 2013 the first leg of the final of the Copa Libertadores . A few months later, Pitana was scheduled for his first FIFA tournament, the U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, where he chaired two preliminary round matches and a round of 16.

It celebrated its preliminary climax with participation in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In this he led three group games and a quarter-finals.

He was nominated by FIFA as one of nine main referees for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia .

In March 2018, Pitana was nominated as one of 36 referees for the final round of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In addition to the opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia, he was in charge of another group match, a round of 16 and a quarter-finals. FIFA also nominated Pitana to lead the final between France and Croatia in Moscow. After his compatriot Horacio Elizondo, Pitana is only the second referee to be appointed at a world championship for both the opening game and the final. He was named World Referee of the Year 2018 by the IFFHS .
