Markus Merk (born March 15, 1962 in Kaiserslautern ) is a former German football referee . From 1988 to 2008 he directed games in the Bundesliga, and between 1992 and 2007 he also served as a FIFA referee. He was voted “World Referee of the Year” three times.

Life

Markus Merk, son of the honorary member of 1. FC Kaiserslautern Rudi Merk, was an altar boy for ten years in his youth . He lives in Weisenheim am Berg near Bad Dürkheim, is married and has a son. He is a member of 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

Merk studied dentistry at the University of Cologne and has been a doctor of dentistry since 1990 . Until the beginning of 2005 he ran a dental practice in Kaiserslautern. After they were sold, he held motivational seminars in Germany. Since August 14, 2010, he has hosted the football program Maraton on the Turkish television broadcaster Lig TV together with Sansal Büyüka, Tümer Metin and Hakan Şükür . He worked as an expert for the pay TV broadcaster Sky for eight years until the 2018/19 season. He is a member of the German Academy for Football Culture .

In order to keep himself physically fit, Merk dedicates herself to the triathlon .

On December 1, 2019, he was elected deputy chairman and spokesman for the supervisory board of 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

Games

Merk led his first Bundesliga game on August 20, 1988, when VfL Bochum played against Bayer 05 Uerdingen (1-1). In 1993 he whistled the DFB Cup final between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and the amateurs from Hertha BSC .

On December 3, 1997, Merk headed the DFB Cup game Alemannia Aachen against SV Waldhof Mannheim . After Mario Krohm's penalty converted in the margin, he did not recognize a goal for Alemannia, but continued the game with a referee's ball because a second ball had flown onto the field during the penalty execution from the Mannheim block. Alemannia lost the game on penalties, their protest against the score of the game was dismissed.

In 2002 he played two games at the World Cup in Korea and Japan .

At the 2004 European Championships in Portugal , Merk was the referee of the two preliminary round games between France and England (2: 1) and between Denmark and Sweden (2: 2). He was also entrusted by UEFA with the management of the final of the European Championship between Portugal and Greece (0-1). Merk was the second German referee after Rudi Glöckner's World Cup final in 1970 to lead the final of a World or European Championship. Merk has been volunteering in India for leisure and vacation since 1991 . In 1999 his commitment resulted in a comprehensive aid project in and around the city of Sogospatty in southern India, which he brought to life with the establishment of the India Aid Association in Kaiserslautern . The project builds and looks after schools, orphanages and other social institutions.
