Portugal - Netherlands (World Cup 2006)

During the match between Portugal and the Netherlands in the second round of the 2006 World Cup - dubbed the “Battle of Nuremberg” in the media - Ivanov distributed 16 yellow cards , 4 of which were yellow and red . Four evictions in one game are a record in a soccer world championship. Ivanov was then no longer nominated for the other games of the 2006 World Cup.

Ivanov was criticized, especially by the teams involved, for having acted inconsistently. FIFA President Sepp Blatter also said that Ivanov had "whistled" the game. A few days later, Blatter apologized for his criticism. Many referees also blamed FIFA, as it restricted the referees very much in their previous style with some new instructions.
