NGC 4535 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SAB (s) c in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic , which is an estimated 85 million light years from the Milky Way . It is part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster , a collection of galaxies that are all held together by their mutual attraction.
Because the galaxy is easy to miss in smaller telescopes, it is sometimes called the "Lost Galaxy". This nickname goes back to an article by amateur astronomer Leland S. Copeland in the 1950s.

The object was discovered on December 28, 1785 by the astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel .
