NGC 4523 is a spiral dwarf galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBm in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky. It is estimated to be 10 million light years from the Milky Way and about 10,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 798 , IC 800 , IC 3522 , IC 3534 .

The type IIP supernova SN 1999gq was observed here.

The object was discovered on April 19, 1865 by the astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest .
