NGC 4506 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 31 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 20,000 ly. The galaxy is listed as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under the catalog name VCC 1419 .
The galaxies NGC 4477 , NGC 4479 , IC 3501 , IC 3520 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on January 14, 1787 .
