NGC 4485 is an irregular dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type IBm / P with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 24 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 15,000 light-years across. Together with NGC 4490 , it forms the interacting galaxy pair (Arp 269) , Holm 414 or KPG 341 and is considered a member of the NGC 4258 group ( LGG 290 ).

NGC 4485 was originally a normal spiral galaxy , but its appearance has changed drastically due to the close encounter with the galaxy NGC 4490. A so-called tidal arm , which protrudes around 24,000 light years into space, connects the two galaxies.

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class double galaxies with linked arms .

The object was discovered on January 14, 1788 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
