NGC 4488 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 40 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 50,000 ly. It is listed as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under catalog number VCC 1318 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4464 , NGC 4465 , NGC 4472 , NGC 4492 .
The object was discovered on December 28, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
