NGC 4500 is a barred spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Great Bear. It is estimated to be 143 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 ly in diameter.
The object was discovered on April 17, 1789 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7 inch mirror telescope.
