NGC 4492 = IC 3438 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 75 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is listed under catalog number VCC 1330 as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster and is considered a member of the NGC 4535 group ( LGG 296 ).

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on December 28, 1785 .
