NGC 4476 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 85 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light-years across. Together with NGC 4478 it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair. Together with eight other galaxies, it is part of the NGC 4461 group ( LGG 286 ) and under catalog number VCC 1250 it is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4486 , IC 3440 , IC 3443 , IC 3445 .

The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7-inch mirror telescope.
