NGC 4493 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E2 in the constellation Virgo the northern sky . It is estimated to be 306 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light years in diameter . Together with PGC 1170468 ( NGC 4493-2 ) it forms a tight gravitationally bound galaxy pair .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 4437 .
The object was discovered on March 22, 1865 by the astronomer Albert Marth .
