NGC 4496 = NGC 4505 is a pair of galaxies in the constellation Virgo listed in the New General Catalog . For better differentiation, the two galaxies are also designated NGC 4496A ( barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc) and NGC 4496B (irregular galaxy of the Hubble type IBm), as they differ significantly in their distance (74 million light years and 199 million light years respectively ). The terms NGC 4496 and NGC 4496A are used synonymously.
The pair of galaxies was discovered in 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7 inch mirror telescope.
