NGC 4509 is a spiral dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type Sab with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 42 million light years from the Milky Way and about 10,000 light years in diameter. Together with 18 other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4274 group ( LGG 279 ).
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 11, 1828 .
