NGC 4494 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E1 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Haar der Berenike. The galaxy is estimated to be 60 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years across. Together with NGC 4565 and NGC 4562 , it forms the small galaxy group LGG 294.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies IC 3439 , IC 3449 , IC 3455 , IC 3469 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 6, 1785 .
